The Broadmoor’s annual giant gingerbread display this year is based on the resort’s “Heartfelt – Home for the Holidays” theme as friends who are dear to us gather near to us once again this year.
Standing roughly 10’ tall x 12’ wide x 8’ deep, building a Gingerbread Chateau is no easy feat. This year’s sugary masterpiece involved 2 carpenters and 10 pastry chefs, and took approximately 288 elf hours to complete. Crafted with The Broadmoor’s very own in-house gingerbread recipe, here are the ingredients by the numbers:
958lbs of Powdered Sugar
475lbs of Flour
650 Eggs
19lbs of Holiday Spices
200lbs of Honey
128lbs of Molasses
6lbs of Salt
164lbs of Dark Chocolate
89lbs of Butter
3lbs of Baking Soda
10lbs of Heavy Cream
2lbs of Fresh Yeast
160 Chocolate Bars
20lbs of Candy Canes
40lbs of Cherry Slices
24lbs of Green Apple Gummy Bears
20lbs of Chocolate Leaves
20lbs of Chocolate Stars
30lbs of Hot Tamales
960 Gilliam Peppermint Sticks
21lbs of Jordan Almonds
“The pastry team begins the production of the gingerbread baked goods and chocolate for the display in early November and take turns working on it in shifts,” said David Patterson, executive chef. “It’s a labor of love but watching guests and visitors – especially children – enjoy the display is quite magical,” he added. “The Broadmoor’s annual giant gingerbread displays certainly add a special touch of fun to the holidays.”
Located in The Broadmoor’s main building mezzanine, the sweet display is open for all to enjoy now through New Year’s Day.
While it may be close to life-sized, this cozy cookie chateau is not bookable, but those interested in staying the night may take advantage of special holiday programming and winter rates at The Broadmoor by visiting Broadmoor.com.
