Icelandair and Southwest Airlines have signed a strategic partnership agreement. The partnership will allow customers to easily connect between the two airlines’ networks, with sales and travel through Baltimore launching in February.

Southwest Airlines is the largest domestic carrier in the US and offers flights to numerous destinations across North America. Icelandair is Southwest’s initial airline partner.

Last year, the two airlines signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on a strategic partnership with Baltimore as the first connecting airport. Today, two additional connecting points were announced, Nashville and Denver, which will further open new and exciting possibilities for both airlines’ customers later this year. Customers will then be able to travel via Baltimore, Nashville and Denver onwards to Iceland and Europe, and from Iceland on Southwest’s extensive network via the three gateways.

Last month, Icelandair took delivery of the first Airbus aircraft in the airline’s 87-year history. The A321LR will be the successor of Icelandair’s Boeing 757, which has been the backbone of the airline’s fleet for decades. The A321LR is also expected to be up to 30% more fuel efficient which supports the airline’s sustainability efforts regarding operational efficiency, CO₂ reductions and reduced noise footprint compared to previous generation aircraft.
