Airbnb: US travelers seeking lesser-known destinations this winter

If you are on the hunt for an under-the-radar winter getaway, you’re not alone. According to new data from Airbnb, US travelers are shifting away from well-known winter hotspots and seeking more under-the-radar destinations.

Families are leading the way in domestic and local winter travel this year in the US, with 80% choosing suburban and rural locations for their getaways.

Nearly half of winter travelers will be vacationing with family and for most, visiting family and friends remains their top reason to travel. That’s likely why Airbnb listings with four or more bedrooms have seen an increase in bookings with the growing demand for multigenerational gatherings. Guests also have the option to choose experiences through Airbnb Originals. We stayed in a terrific 3-bedroom Airbnb in Scottsdale, AZ that would be ideal for a multigenerational getaway complete with a pool, hot tub, fire pit and a separate small house with a fourth bedroom, bathroom, and kitchenette.

The exception is Italy which is experiencing a large increase in searches for this winter, particularly in the Olympic host regions of Trentino-South Tyrol, Lombardy, and Veneto, fueled by excitement for the upcoming Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics.

It isn’t really a surprise, however, that those looking to travel overseas are seeking places that offer easy city access to natural beauty. They are searching the Australian Capital Territory with the chance for wildlife encounters and the city lights of Canberra. Also popular is Santiago, Chile with the Andes a short trip away, Goslar, Germany in the snowy mountains and a picturesque medieval center and San José, Costa Rica surrounded by mountains and valleys, with easy access to cloud forests and offering a vibrant city center.

US travelers are looking to either explore hidden-gem ski towns or smaller warm-weather destinations. They want a welcoming atmosphere that won’t be overrun by crowds. Value is key, as everyone is keeping an eye on the economy.
