Lawyer. Revolutionary. Political prisoner. World leader. Elder statesman. Human rights icon. Global advocate for change.

Nelson Mandela embraced all these roles, leaving a lasting impact on people around the world. Now, Seattle’s Museum of History & Industry (MOHAI) invites you to explore his life and legacy in Mandela: The Official Exhibition, opening Saturday, May 24, 2025.

Mandela: The Official Exhibition, produced by Round Room Live in partnership with The Royal House of Mandela (RHoM) and RHoM Investments, explores the legacy of one of the world’s most renowned freedom fighters. Featuring personal belongings and artifacts rarely seen outside of South Africa, the exhibition offers unique insights from family, friends, and others, revealing the deeper stories behind the headlines.

An immersive and interactive experience, the exhibition features previously unseen film, photos and the display of over 150 historical artifacts and personal effects on loan from the Mandela family, museums and archives worldwide.

“We are honored to bring Mandela: The Official Exhibition to MOHAI and our community. Nelson Mandela’s life story is a powerful testament to resilience, equity, and the transformative power of education—values that continue to shape our world today,” said Leonard Garfield, MOHAI’s Executive Director. “This exhibition aligns with MOHAI’s commitment to fostering a deeper understanding of history and inspiring conversations that connect the past to the present.”

A Life of Impact

Visitors to the exhibition will explore the people and places that shaped Nelson Mandela, influencing his beliefs, leadership, and commitment to justice. Through a series of immersive zones, guests will learn about his early life, his work as a lawyer, and his growing role in the African National Congress.

The exhibition also highlights Mandela’s fight against apartheid, his long imprisonment, and his eventual release, leading to his historic election as South Africa’s first Black president.

The journey concludes with a look at Mandela’s enduring impact, his dedication to service, and the legacy he continues to inspire around the world.

Unparalleled Authenticity

Nelson Mandela’s story has been shared in many ways, including in his own words. What sets Mandela: The Official Exhibition apart is its immersive approach, featuring rarely seen film, photos, and more than 150 historical artifacts and personal items from the Mandela family, museums, and archives around the world.

These objects, on loan from the Royal House of Mandela and Global Heritage Partners, are combined with multimedia presentations and recreated environments, offering visitors a deeper, more personal connection to key moments in Mandela’s life.

“The Royal House of Mandela is honored to support this exhibition celebrating the life and legacy of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela,” said his grandson, Nkosi Zwelivelile Mandela. “It captures the essence of a global icon whose name is synonymous with solidarity, justice, and peace. This exhibition truly brings his story to life, and I believe all who experience it will feel the lasting impact of his work and vision.”

Seattle’s Role in the Global Anti-Apartheid Movement

MOHAI will also highlight Mandela’s 1999 visit to Seattle and present a look at Seattle’s role in the anti-apartheid movement, including the work of the Seattle Coalition Against Apartheid. Mandela recognized Seattle as one of the first U.S. cities to boycott South African goods.

The exhibition is made possible with the support of several South African Heritage Partners, including

The Robben Island Museum, The Liliesleaf Heritage Site, Mqhekezweni: The Great Place, Christo Brand, and Zelda la Grange, who have contributed valuable content and insight.
