The New York Hall of Science (NYSCI) will spotlight the connection between science education and democracy during a series of climate-focused events from SEPTEMBER 22 to SEPTEMBER 28. Details of the exciting week-long calendar of events are provided below with more details here.

The engaging programming, which will occur in conjunction with UN Climate Week, will educate participants on climate change and how communities, NGOs, and the government agencies are using science and technology to address this existential issue. Participants will experience hands-on presentations about building a more resilient community and hear from experts and groups on the ways everyone can get involved in this work.

Experiences include: 

  1. An immersive rainforest experience and opportunity to learn from the Rainforest Partnership how they can make a difference to protect the biodiversity of the rainforest.
  2. The premiere party of Films for the Forest, a series nominated short films all centered around the theme of “Water: Fertility & Prosperity.” See a list of films here. The films will be presented each day the museum is open to visitors.
  3. Daily discussions with visitors from Pablo Venegas, ​​Rainforest Partnership’s resident Herpatologist, about life as a zoologist, what it is like to discover new species and going on scientific expeditions.
  4. A conversation with renowned artists EARTHGANG, an American hip hop duo from Atlanta, Georgia. Rappers Olu and WowGr8 will discuss their commitment to using science to help address climate change and make a visit to NYSCI’s garden.
  5. Series of climate-related panels with experts and local organizations making an impact on Queens’ waterfront, flood prevention, and urban gardening. 
  6. Launch of new Hydroponic Gardens towers in conjunction with NY Sun Works and the Queens Borough President Donovan Richards. An opportunity for community members to build their own upcycled Hydroponic gardens alongside the Queens Borough President. 
  7. Opportunities to integrate NYSCI’s “DESIGN, MAKE, PLAY” methodology to expand their understanding of STEM and Democracy as they discover their own power and passion to make positive change.

Tuesday 9/24: Arts + STEM = Environmental Justice Power

o    3:00pm: Launch Party of Immersive Rainforest Installation in the Viscusi Gallery 

o    4:00pm EARTHGANG visit to NYSCI Garden – with conversations with community about community gardening and how they can make a difference

o    5:00pm A Conversation with EARTHGANG: Artists using Science to make a Difference

o    6:00pm Screening of Films for the Forest followed by a light reception

Thursday 9/26: NYSCI and Climate Change

o    2:30pm: “NYSCI and Corona: Stronger than the Storm” panel

o    4:00pm – 5:00pm A Conversation with EARTHGANG: Artists using Science to make a Difference

o    5:00pm – 8:00pm NYSCI Garden Celebration: Community Gardens and Civic Change

Saturday 9/28: Closing Day – FREE Admission from 4pm to 10pm

o    4:00pm – 7:00pm Queens Borough President’s Office Climate Expo 

§  5:30pm Queens Borough President remarks

o    5:30pm Launch of new Hydroponic Garden Towers at NYSCI – in conjunction with NY Sun Works and the Queens Borough President. NY Sun Works will run a hands-on workshop upcycling waterbottles in to hydroponic gardens. 

o    5:00pm – 10:00pm NYSCI Nights. The museum stays open late for the Queens Night Market crowd with fun activities like silent disco, bingo, and more!
