The San Juan Islands in Washington State invite you to experience the quiet season. Some ideas:
Take a quiet forest hike. Choose your level of difficulty, from easy walks to challenging climbs, across many different landscapes on countless nature preserves and public lands. Maps for each island can be found on this Hiking Maps page. And thank the past, present, and future generations of all Native Nations and Indigenous Peoples whose ancestral lands we travel, explore, and play on. Always practice Leave No Trace ethics on your adventures and follow local regulations. Please explore responsibly!
Savor a delicious meal. The Islands’ “gourmet archipelago” offers a delicious and diverse selection of food and drinks, perfect for any type of gathering or a quiet, romantic meal. Island chefs prepare seasonal creations using locally sourced seafood, meats, and produce paired with “liquid arts” by artisan producers who take great pride in their wines, brews, ciders, and spirits. And don’t worry, the dress code in any restaurant is Pacific Northwest casual.
Treat yourself to a spa day. Highly recommended is a visit to one of the Islands’ excellent spas. What could be more refreshing than to be surrounded by nature and also indulge yourself with a spa experience? You’ll be pleased with the blissful treatments available, from the traditional to signature options.
Witness wildlife in the Winter. In the San Juans, intrepid nature lovers have the opportunity to spot an array of birds that only visit between fall and spring months. Orcas, Lopez, and San Juan Islands are part of the Puget Loop of the Washington State Birding Trail. Aspiring naturalists will be able to check off several terrestrial birds as well as marine species. So lace up those hiking boots, grab a hat and gloves, and make sure the binoculars are handy!
