The Town of Grand Lake CO hosts its inaugural “skijoring showcase” March 8-9, 2025. The thrilling sport of skijoring—in which a snow skier is towed behind a galloping horse and rider through an obstacle course of jumps, turns and tricks—is a popular winter pastime in Colorado’s mountain towns, many of which have their roots in ranching heritage.
Situated on the shores of the largest natural alpine lake in the state, the town of Grand Lake regularly hosts winter sporting events such as snowmobile races, ice fishing contests and ice hockey tournaments throughout the winter season, and in 2025 it will add skijoring to the schedule.
“Grand Lake has an adventurous, Western spirit that is a perfect fit for this type of event, and our local businesses are eager to welcome new visitors to town this time of year,” says Kelly Kirkpatrick, Executive Director of the Grand Lake Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center.
The Grand Lake Skijoring competition will take place directly on Grand Avenue, the town’s main drag where shops and restaurants line a wooden boardwalk, and spectators can witness the action from Town Square Park (1026 Park Avenue) where a beer garden will also be located. The event is described as “a testament to human and animal collaboration and a celebration of winter sports culture” and is expected to draw enthusiasts from all over the region to enjoy skijoring’s festive and competitive spirit.
Race organizers have garnered the support of a multitude of generous sponsors to help support their first event, including Big Valley Construction and High Range Tree Service, but volunteers are still needed. Contact event organizers at GrandLakeSkijor@gmail.com to sign up as a volunteer and help make this historic weekend in Grand Lake a great success!
The races are scheduled to start at 10 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday mornings, followed by awards ceremonies and celebrations. Visit www.grandlakeskijor.com to see the full event schedule, register a team or sign up to volunteer. NO DOGS ALLOWED.
