Two Hotels, One Anniversary: How Milwaukee Brings America’s Story to Life

As travelers search for affordable summer getaways that feel special, Milwaukee is quietly making the case as one of the season’s most rewarding stops. Two of the city’s most notable hotels are inviting visitors to mark the nation’s 250th anniversary through art, history, culture, and hospitality, with experiences that few major-city destinations can match.

The Pfister Hotel and Saint Kate – The Arts Hotel are framing the milestone as a chance to experience America’s stories firsthand. The two properties offer distinct themed programming throughout the summer, from immersive gallery experiences to history-driven celebrations built around Independence Day. With rooms starting as low as $149 at The Pfister and $149-$169 at Saint Kate during select summer dates, particularly in early July, the hotels offer an accessible alternative to crowded, high-priced holiday destinations. The Pfister is also running a 25% off suites special through July 12, giving guests added room to upgrade their stay.

Sleeping Inside American Art

Saint Kate turns a routine hotel visit into a cultural immersion. Guests can quite literally sleep surrounded by original work in The Canvas Rooms, and the property’s galleries, artist-designed spaces, and expansive collection extend the experience well beyond the lobby. The hotel also connects visitors to Milwaukee’s wider creative scene, offering access to local art galleries, theaters, and performance venues that few traditional hotels can rival.

To honor the anniversary, Saint Kate has launched a special America250 Art Tour, led by Curator-in-Residence Shane McAdams, that runs through July 31. The tour centers on the hotel’s exhibition Drawn to Sculpture, which examines how artists build forms through accumulation, experimentation, and invention. McAdams frames the show as a fitting reflection of how America itself has taken shape over two and a half centuries. Along the way, he shares the stories behind individual works, insights drawn from years of curating contemporary art, and his perspective on American creative identity. Each tour concludes with a complimentary red, white, and blue cocktail crafted exclusively for the occasion.

This summer, the experience also rises above the gallery floor. Upper Bar, Saint Kate’s new cocktail venue, perches above the Milwaukee River with sweeping views of the downtown skyline. The bar pairs handcrafted cocktails and a curated wine list with shareable bites in a setting that feels both elevated and relaxed. New for the season, Upper Bar hosts Sunset Sessions, a live music series running Fridays and Saturdays throughout the summer. Sets begin at 4 p.m. and feature a rotating lineup of artists and DJs, giving guests one more way to experience the hotel’s arts-first identity, this time with open sky and river views in place of gallery walls.

A Landmark Steeped in History

A short walk away, The Pfister Hotel leans into the country’s history rather than its art. A Milwaukee landmark since 1893, The Pfister ranks among the most celebrated historic hotels in the United States. It has welcomed generations of travelers, dignitaries, and cultural figures through its doors, including several U.S. presidents, and that heritage shapes the property’s anniversary programming.

This summer, the hotel celebrates the milestone with patriotic Afternoon Tea experiences, a tradition The Pfister has long been known for, featuring custom decor, themed pastries, and holiday-inspired touches around Independence Day. The property rounds out its lineup with patriotic cocktails created in honor of the presidents who have stayed within its walls, turning a simple drink order into a small history lesson.

Two Paths to the Same Celebration

Together, the two hotels give travelers distinct ways to engage with the same national moment. Saint Kate invites guests to consider American identity through the lens of contemporary art, while The Pfister grounds the celebration in more than a century of lived history. For families and solo travelers weighing where to spend a summer break, the pairing of cultural depth and genuine sense of occasion makes a compelling argument.

The city itself adds to the appeal. Milwaukee combines lakefront views, walkable neighborhoods, and a thriving food and arts scene that rewards visitors who venture beyond the usual coastal hubs. Anyone looking to commemorate a major anniversary with substance rather than spectacle may find that the Midwest delivers more than expected. Between an arts hotel where guests sleep among original works and a 19th-century landmark that has hosted presidents, Milwaukee pairs accessibility with a real sense of occasion, and it does so well beyond a single holiday occasion.
