On Harriet Tubman Day on March 10, Cayuga County proudly commemorates the life and legacy of one of America’s most revered figures, Harriet Tubman.
After her monumental efforts as a conductor on the Underground Railroad and her courageous service in the Union Army during the Civil War, Tubman chose Auburn, New York, as her home. This decision was influenced by her close friendship with Secretary of State William H. Seward and his wife, Frances, who invited her to settle in this welcoming community.
Each year, the AME Zion Thompson Memorial Church on Parker Street in Auburn holds a proclamation ceremony to honor Tubman’s enduring legacy. This church, where she was an active member, stands as a testament to her faith and commitment to community.
Tubman’s final resting place is in Auburn’s Fort Hill Cemetery, beneath a large tree with two small bushes on each side of her headstone. Her gravesite has become a place of reflection and inspiration for visitors worldwide. Additionally, her residence and the Harriet Tubman Home for the Aged are integral parts of the Harriet Tubman National Historical Park, offering deeper insights into her life’s work and legacy.
We invite you to join us in celebrating Harriet Tubman Day, reflecting on her extraordinary contributions to freedom and equality, and recognizing Auburn’s significant role in her life’s journey. For more information about the observance of Harriet visit here
