Sights to see and things to do in Michigan’s second largest city
By Karen Saltos, Taking the Kids correspondent
Grand Rapids is the second largest city in Michigan, with a population of approximately 199,000. The Grand River runs through the city center.
ArtPrize, an annual international art competition, is open until October 01, 2023, so now is the time to take the kids to explore all the participating artists and venues in Grand Rapids. If you prefer traveling in the winter, check out the first-ever Christkindl Markt slated for November 17 – December 23, 2023. The Christmas Village will feature artisan gift and food vendors and live holiday entertainment.
The best place to stay is at the Amway Grand Plaza, a family-friendly hotel near fun attractions, including the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library & Museum, accessible via a footbridge over the Grand River. The hotel offers a family fun package with the following amenities:
- Duckpin bowling
- Free breakfast
- Internet
- Pickleball court
- Swimming pool
Here are my top three must-see attractions in Grand Rapids for visitors with kids.
1.Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park
Experience the park on a tram tour with a knowledgeable guide. They run every 1/2 hour between 10 AM- 3 PM, Monday – Saturday. Make sure you check out the American Horse sculpture by Nina Akamu.
2. Grand Rapids Downtown Market
This bustling market offers food-centered experiences, and its indoor facility features more than 20 vendors offering goodies such as donuts, ice cream, and popcorn. Dozens of artisans line their outdoor market shed during special events.
3. Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library & Museum
Learn about President Gerald Ford and his wife, Betty Ford, who also left an impressive legacy. The artifacts, exhibits, and photos are captivating, and the DeVos Learning Center is a hub for students visiting the Museum.
