I wish I’d had REI’s Stormhenge 850 Down Hybrid Parka on our recent trip above the Arctic Circle in Norway. I’d never worn so many layers under my ski parka, and I was still cold with buffeting winds and subzero temperatures.
It’s a longer, warmer (the 850-fill-power goose down) parka. It’s not only compressible but provides plenty of warmth and is treated to help it resist moisture. It’s puffy jacket that’s waterproof (a 2-layer waterproof/breathable nylon shell with sealed seams). It’s also made with 94 percent recycled nylon.

I also love the inside pocket, great for a phone, or in my case, a notebook and pen. There is also a 2-way zipper that can act as a vent if you get too hot.
You could wear this jacket skiing on a frigid day (the adjustable hood is designed to be used with a helmet) or just being out and about in the cold, as we were in Norway. ($299)

I also wish I’d had REI’s Swiftland Hybrid Running Pants ($79) on that trip. They are breathable, wind and water-resistant with a 4-way stretch that makes them comfortable whether you are running, XC skiing, or on a long-haul flight. I think these will become my go-to travel pants. There is a zipped back pocket for phones, two other hand pockets, two more pockets for snacks and a small key or credit card pocket. You could layer long underwear underneath or push them up when it is warm. I also love that they would dry quickly—ideal for travel.
