Step back in time and delve into the destination’s rich Revolutionary War history by exploring itineraries and sites that uncover key landmarks and battlefields, walk in the steps of local hero General Francis Marion, the “Swamp Fox,” and enjoy annual commemorative events. 

Special Events

  • Francis Marion Memorial Service (February 27): Travelers and public alike are invited to honor the memory of one of the most well-remembered figures of the American Revolutionary War, General Francis Marion. Notorious for his “Swamp Fox” nickname, Marion and his militia were known for their resourcefulness and guerilla-style warfare tactics throughout the campaign against the British. The South Carolina Air National Guard Swamp Fox Wing will fly over the site followed by the Washington Light Infantry color guard to post the colors.
  • Berkeley Battlefield Tour (May 4 & 10; October 18): Berkeley County is famous for its Revolutionary War connections, not only serving as the setting for 32 of the Revolution’s over 200 battle sites in South Carolina, but also for its two prominent military leaders: General Francis Marion and General William Moultrie. Travelers and history lovers can explore the Patriots’ victories and defeats on the Berkeley County battlefields.
  • 244th Anniversary Commemoration of the Battle of Eutaw Springs (August 29-30): Located in Orangeburg County and acting as one of the most important locations of the American Revolution in South Carolina, the Battle of Eutaw Springs served as a major turning point in the War and set the stage for the momentous surrender at Yorktown. The program will include narrated tours on the battle site, a Patriotic Program at the Historic Church of Epiphany, and wreath laying ceremonies at the battleground monument as well as General Francis Marion’s tomb.
  • 23rd Annual Francis Marion Symposium (Oct 17-18): A must-attend gathering for history enthusiasts, the Francis Marion Symposium honors the life and legacy of General Francis Marion and his contributions to the Southern Campaigns of the American Revolution. Each year, visitors can immerse in captivating discussions, engaging presentations and interactive workshops all centered around the accomplishments of the hero himself.
