Aurora is considered by many to be the gateway to adventure in the Colorado Rockies as it’s the closest urban hub to Denver International Airport. While many overlook the state’s third-largest city after flying in, it’s worth spending at least a couple of days here first as you’ll be able to acclimate to the high elevation before reaching even greater heights.

Cherry Creek State Park
Cherry Creek State Park has it all for the outdoor enthusiast. Here, 35 miles of multi-use trails wind through a vast natural prairie, making it the perfect day spot for runners, cyclists, or anyone who fancies a stroll in the fresh, open air.
The park also consists of an 880-acre reservoir with a sandy beach for those who want to swim or enjoy a host of other activities on and in the water. Rentals are available on site for boating, jet-skiing, paddleboarding, kayaking, or canoeing.
Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Park
Aurora is also home to a large and diverse wildlife refuge. Over 280 different species of birds have been observed at the refuge. You’ll have the chance to see bald eagles, hawks, and owls. Bison, black-footed ferrets, deer, and plenty of prairie dogs also call the park home.
For those who wish to explore on foot, the refuge has over 20 miles of peaceful walking paths to observe wildlife through the prairie grass and wetlands. Or, take a scenic 11-mile Wildlife Drive to see Bison grazing just outside your window. There’s no entrance fee to visitors or reservations required. Hours are between sunrise and sunset; in fact, the open skies offer a gorgeous view of both.
Electric Bike Tours
No bike? No problem. Renting an electric bike is a fantastic way to explore Aurora and its many streets and miles of trails. Self-guided electric bike tours come with turn-by-turn directions from your phone or provided bluetooth helmet, so it’s a fun and safe way to experience as much or as little as you like of the “Gateway to the Rockies.”
Shopping & Dining
Stanley Marketplace is a favorite among locals. All under one roof, the marketplace consists of over 50 independently owned local businesses, including restaurants, shops, fitness centers, and more. There is always something special happening at this community hub, such as weekly farmers’ markets, live music on the patio, and pop-up art galleries.
Indoor Activities
Whether looking for something to do on a snowy day or wanting a break from the hot summer sun, Aurora has plenty to see and do indoors. Learn about the history of the town at the Aurora History Museum which features a fully restored 1913 trolley trailer and over 100 historical photos. Or, try out one of Aurora’s many breweries, then head down to the Fox Theater or the Vintage Theater for a unique show. You can also attempt an escape at the Wreck Room Escape Game.
