Very few people have experienced what it’s like to watch professional women’s sports in a stadium that was intentionally built for women. But that’s exactly what fans of Kansas City Current are able to do after the team recently opened the first-ever stadium purpose built for women’s sports.
And if you’ve never watched professional women in a stadium built for women, you don’t know what you’re missing! Unlike many women’s sports fans who sit in empty, far away, or deteriorating stadiums, CPKC Stadium is changing the experience.
At a typical game:
- The 11,500-seat stadium is nearly sold out –the supporter section is filled with energy and drum sets; families arrive early for a chance to spot players warming up and taking the field.
- Energy is electric. A train whistle blows every time a goal is scored – a touch to honor the stadium’s namesake Canadian Pacific. And following the whistle is the KCMO Anthem, a song written and performed by rap artist Tech N9ne with lyrics now known by ever KC Current fan.
- You will be hard pressed to find anyone not wearing the team’s fashionable red and teal branded swag – and the line for the beloved retail store on site can sometimes get long but is always worthwhile.
- Young soccer players line the halls from the pitch to the stadium to high five players – and behind them is a mural to honor Title IX and remind everyone of the journey that came before this stadium opened.
- Fans will enjoy a culinary experience custom designed by local James Beard award-winning restauranteurs that includes an eclectic range of menu options to appeal to anyone’s taste and featuring local favorites like Joe’s BBQ, Waldo Thai, or even a custom ice cream flavor called the KC Current Obsession, a strawberry cheesecake branded to align with the team’s teal and red colors.
