This year marks a significant milestone in Germany’s cultural history as the city of Weimar celebrates the 250th anniversary of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s arrival—a monumental event that forever shaped the city’s artistic and intellectual legacy. Goethe was an historic poet, playwright, novelist, scientist, statesman, theatre-director, and critic.

Born in 1749 in Frankfurt, Goethe moved to Weimar in 1775 where he found much of his creative soul and spent a significant portion of his life. At the time of his arrival, Goethe already had fragments of Faust in mind. The subject would occupy him for the rest of his life and would ultimately become his most famous and important work. In Faust, he blended the knowledge and concerns of his era, expressing them in poetry.

As part of the Theme Year 2025, Weimar will transform into a citywide Faust workshop. Starting on Walpurgis Night in 2025, visitors can expect a range of exhibitions, installations, and events celebrating Goethe’s masterpiece. Goethe wrote Faust at his renowned residence on Frauenplan, but the entire city of Weimar acted as his “think tank.” Travelers can explore the remarkable Faust collections at the Herzogin Anna Amalia Bibliothek, as well as the Faust manuscripts at the Goethe- und Schiller-Archiv.

Another highlight during the anniversary year is the Goethe.Culture.Run, a unique event concept that combines sport with the spirit of creativity and cultural heritage. The event will take place on April 25, 2025, and invites participants to run through the scenic streets of Weimar, a UNESCO World Heritage site, while celebrating the city’s rich artistic and literary legacy.

Goethe’s profound influence, both through his iconic writings and his role as a public figure, continues to inspire generations worldwide. His anniversary year will serve as an occasion for reflection, celebration, and a deeper exploration of the legacy of one of history’s greatest literary minds.
