Getaways from long weekends to family cruises
Are sun and sand, snow, or city lights among your spring break ideas? Looking to avoid the crowds, reconnect as a family and do no harm — to the environment or your wallet?
Wherever you want to go this spring with your family, we’ve got you covered with fresh spring break ideas for 2025. Consider sailing away (no meals to cook, no beds to make) on eco-friendlier ships. Earn bragging rights to being among the first to ride a new theme park attraction. Show off your camping skills (with the help of new friends) and leave those screens behind.
Whether you have a long weekend or a week, relax and enjoy yourselves. Remember, with kids it’s more about the journey than the destination. If you can’t get away now, plan for summer. You will save significantly if you book early and have more time to plan an extended family gathering.
Grab a rare opportunity for a bucket list trip this spring in the USA.

RAFT THE GRAND CANYON THIS SPRING? IT’S POSSIBLE!
There’s no better way to explore the Grand Canyon than on a guided Western River Expeditions white water raft trip. There are plenty of thrills on the river, ancient ruins, petroglyphs, and side canyons to hike, starry skies and the chance to camp along the river without all the work a back country trip involves. Experienced guides keep you enthralled with tales of early canyon explorers as well as how the canyon was formed. Get away from your devices as there’s no connectivity deep within the canyon walls.
Typically, it’s necessary to book a year out. But Western River Expeditions has availability April 3,9,15 (seven days and six nights) on trips leaving from Lee’s Ferry to below Lava Falls.
This is a fantastic adventure to share with teens, college-aged and grown kids (the minimum age is 12) and the cost ($4,295 pp) is a lot less than many other bucket list trips.
Another plus: April weather is ideal with highs in the 80s. Take hikes that aren’t possible in the significantly hotter summer months. This is also the best time to see wildflowers.
There’s no need to hike in or out of the canyon, a challenge for even the most fit. Guests can either drive or fly from Las Vegas to Page, Az. At the end of the trip, guests helicopter out.
If April doesn’t work, there also is rare availability in August for five night trips. Book today!
TOP BEACH DESTINATIONS FOR SPRING
You won’t have to search for a place to lay your towels. With over 95,471 miles of coastline from coast to coast, here are lesser known yet stunning beach destinations to select from.
Oregon
While Oregon is known for beautiful beaches, in spring they’re best for strolling and playing catch. Little Cannon Beach is one of our favorite spring break ideas because it’s quaint yet packed with shops and restaurants. In addition to the popular beach, there is the Ecola State Park for hiking, and Haystack Rock, a big rock outcropping, for dramatic picture taking. In inclement weather, check out the highly regarded Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum, resting place of “The Spruce Goose” – the Hughes flying boat. Schedule an in-depth tour when you arrive or climb into the cargo hold any time.
California
This spring, bypass the famous surfing beaches near Los Angeles as the region recovers from wildfires. Skip busy San Diego and instead, head to the values at La Jolla. A waterfront resort like Inn by the Sea La Jolla goes for under $230/N for a double room and there’s a pretty pool. La Jolla Cove cove is perfect for snorkeling and swimming with its calm waters and picturesque cliffs. The nearby Torrey Pines State Beach offers stunning views of the rugged coastline and is a popular spot for hiking and wildlife watching. This part of the California coast boasts the beautiful municipal Torrey Pines Golf Course, a plus if someone in your family is keen to play.
Texas
Don’t forget the South, where Corpus Christi is the main beach hub on the Gulf of America (formerly Gulf of Mexico.) With 100 miles of sandy shores you’re guaranteed fewer crowds. Young families and those with teens will enjoy buzzy Mustang Island, where the affordable Lively Beach has condo rooms for under $200/N. It may be too chilly to swim but you can opt for an exciting night adventure by bike or try GlowRow https://glowrow.com/ who use clear kayaks the illuminate sealife as you paddle. Head indoors to the Texas State Aquarium or the USS Lexington Museum on the Bay and learn together.
Virginia
Go before the crowds reach Virginia Beach, a beloved mid-Atlantic resort destination. Nature lovers can explore the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge and miles of sandy shores. Water sports enthusiasts should try your hand at surfing or paddleboarding. Don’t forget to take a stroll along the iconic 3-mile Virginia Beach Boardwalk, lined with shops, restaurants, and entertainment options. Explore the legacy of Edgar Cayce’s teachings at the free Mind, Body & Spirit Fair (Feb. 22). Celebrity your Irish over the Yuengling Shamrock Marathon Weekend (Mar. 14-16) and admire the blooms in Red Wing Park during the annual Cherry Blossom Festival (March 23-30.) There’s always something happening in Virginia Beach.

PLAN NOW FOR EUROPE THIS SPRING OR SUMMER
CroisiEurope is Europe’s largest and oldest river cruise company operating more than 50 river and small ship cruises, including river ships throughout Europe, canal barges in France, Mediterranean cruises, and cruises around the world . This international experience with a French Flair means service and food are excellent. There’s a friendly, multilingual staff. Shore excursions (included in rates) emphasize expert guided tours of local arts, history, and cultural experiences.
For spring, families can cruise in March and April between Sicily and Malta, the Balearic Islands (an archipelago of eastern Spain known for beaches and scenic coastline) the Italian coast and Sardinia and the Canary Islands ( through March.) These cruises offer different locales as families seek to get away from over touristed destinations and avoid the summer heat.
WHAT’’S NEW: This year, CroisiEurope is celebrating three big anniversaries, 30 years on the Rhone and Saone , 25 years cruising Venice , and 10 years on the Loire with special offers. There are also new more active itineraries in Southeast Asia on a smaller boat (just 14 cabins) including biking, kayaking and sampan rides.
CroisiEurope, while still lesser known to Americans, is very popular among European families, especially for the summer Special Family Club Cruises that sail in Portugal, Italy, Spain, France, Germany and Croatia where children 16 and under travel free or at a 30% discount. A selection of special excursions has been developed for the CroisiFamily summer cruises
The pricing is combinable with multigenerational deals offered in summer on the Family Club Cruises with 20 per cent off for the 2nd generation and a free cruise for the third generation up to age 16. Solo supplements have been waved for adults sharing a room with a child cruising free.
Family and friends’ groups may also enjoy the privacy of one of their modern, crewed barges which ply the canals through the French countryside and Belguim (just 22 passengers.) You can see more in Family Travel Forum’s review of a CroisiEurope cruise.
Since 1976 CroisiEurope has been the pioneer of river cruising in Europe, so their vessels are extremely comfortable and able to navigate in unusual waters. There’s always a main restaurant, bar, lounges, library, and roof deck space for sightseeing. Some ships have small roof deck pools. Each ship is unique and designed for the smallest harbors at the destination, with easy access that’s ideal for family elders. Don’t expect constant activities or kids’ clubs outside of Family Club Cruises, because the focus is on the destinations and local culture and of course, families spending time together.
PLAY BALL IN ARIZONA AND FLORIDA
All of your baseball fans will love heading to Spring Training and so will your wallet. Whether you opt for the Arizona Cactus League (16 teams across 10 stadiums) or Florida’s Grapefruit League, you are guaranteed a good time at the small stadiums. Your kids might even get some autographs!
Spend a few extra days in Arizona catching the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick. Families love the Fields’ interactive Cold Stone Kids Fun Field and Taking the Kids has lots of other Scottsdale activity ideas.
The Florida Grapefruit League comprises 15 MLB teams who play in 13 local stadiums along the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts of the state. Clearwater is home to Bright House Field, the Philadelphia Phillies stadium, as well as plenty of family-friendly beach resorts. Tampa, nearby, hosts the New York Yankees and a beautiful waterfront. The Atlantic coastal town of Jupiter is a good base, because both the Miami Marlins and St. Louis Cardinals play in Jupiter. Nearby, the Houston Astros and Washington Nationals are based in West Palm Beach, giving families lots of options.
Play Ball With Our Spring Savings Tip
Because the tickets at most ballparks cost less than half what they would be at a regular season MLB game (typically starting at less than $30), you won’t feel any guilt if you leave the game after — or even before — the 7th inning stretch.
IT’S MOSTLY FREE! WASHINGTON DC!
There are 100-plus free experiences in the nation’s capital, more than any other city. Yes, this is a crowded and touristy destination but since most attractions are free, we have to give DC a shoutout as a top spring break idea. Go now for pandas, cherry blossoms and history tours.
It’s Panda-monium! over the newly arrived pandas from China at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute. Bao Li and Qing Bao made their public debut the end of January with great fanfare. (Free entry passes and paid parking passes should be reserved in advance through the zoo’s website.) The zoo’s Woodley Park/Cleveland Park metro stop is near Rock Creek Park and the National Cathedral. The Waterfront stop, southwest of the National Mall, is where the Nationals play baseball.
It doesn’t cost anything to see the blooming cherry blossom trees. Running March 20 – April 13, 2025, the National Cherry Blossom Festival celebrates the city’s 3,000-plus trees, most located around the Tidal Basin. There are also 200 trees said to bloom earlier, located in the National Harbor development in nearby Maryland. Many families like to rent bicycles with helmets and trailers, or kids’ bikes and e-bikes (try Pedego in Alexandria and Unlimited Bikes in DC). Biking is the perfect eco-friendly option to get up close to the blooms.
February is Black History Month and the National Museum of African American History and Culture is an important part of any visit to Washington, DC. You can see In Slavery’s Wake: Making Black Freedom in the World, a new exhibit. Have dinner at a Black-owned restaurant. Washington DC is home to the International Underground Railroad Project.. Don’t miss the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial, and the Lincoln Memorial. The latter is where King delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech and where opera singer Marian Anderson performed in front of 75,000 people when she was denied the chance to perform at Constitution Hall because of her race.]
Spring Break Ideas for DC Savings!
There should be good hotel deals, especially in early spring if you look around. Take a free (or name your own price) guided walking tour with DC by Foot. Choose from tours of the National Mall, Arlington Cemetery, even one on the Lincoln assassination. Eileen Ogintz’s Kid’s Guide to Washington, DC , now in its third edition, will entertain the kids while you plan your stay.
VISIT OFF THE BEATEN PATH NATIONAL PARKS
There are now 428 diverse parks, monuments, lands and waters protected by the National Park Service to choose from. More people than ever are visiting, over 325 million people. But most are opting for the most popular including Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Grand Canyon National Park, Zion National Park and Yellowstone National Park. This spring, you can have just as much fun—and AHA moments—in less visited parks.
California
Channel Islands National Park includes five islands plus the surrounding ocean. Visitors have the chance to hike, snorkel, kayak birdwatch and more. Explore some of the best tidepools in Southern California.
Washington
North Cascades National Park in Washington state boasts more than 300 glaciers, 1600 species of identified plants and more than 400 miles of hiking trails.
Nevada
Great Basin National Park in Nevada has a fantastic landscape of both mountains and desert valleys, plus hiking trails for all levels.
Texas
Guadalupe Mountains National Park in Texas has the state’s four highest peaks and the chance to hike in the Salt Basin Dunes that rise from the desert floor. While Big Bend is well known, it’s so far west that you’ll never find a crowd. Explore the national park and adjacent Big Bend State Park, both geographic marvels full of Native American history.
National Parks Are A Spring Bargain!
If you have a child in 4th grade, the complimentary Every Kid Outdoors Annual 4th Grade Pass covers park entry for all children under 16 and up to three adults per passholder and includes the vehicle entrance fee. If you plan to visit more than one park in a year, save with an annual America the Beautiful pass ($80) that also covers all federal recreation sites. Look for Senior Passes (ages 62+) and free passes for military and those with permanent disabilities. Check your park’s website to book ahead for special free activities, guided hikes and talks, and the Junior Ranger program.
VISIT IRELAND FOR ST. PATRICK’S DAY
Ireland is a country that truly comes alive during St. Patrick’s Day (Sunday, March 17, 2025), making it the perfect destination for a family spring break trip. We’d never send you to Dublin , however charming it is. One of the highlights of visiting Ireland during St. Patrick’s Day is experiencing the lively parades and festivities that take place in tiny towns like Enniskillen. Along the Atlantic Coast to Galway, cities and towns are transformed into a sea of green as people gather to celebrate Ireland’s patron saint. Additionally, families can visit iconic landmarks such as the Giant’s Causeway, Wild Atlantic Way, Slieve Guillion and Cliffs of Moher. These breathtaking natural wonders offer stunning views and opportunities for outdoor adventures like hiking and exploring.
For those interested in history and culture, Ireland is home to numerous castles and ancient ruins. Places like Blarney Castle, where you can kiss the famous Blarney Stone, and the ancient site of Newgrange are must-see attractions. Kids will be captivated by tales of leprechauns, fairies, and mythical creatures that are deeply ingrained in Irish folklore. The classic guide to St. Patrick’s Day Traditions with Kids will spark lots of creative ideas.
Food lovers will delight in the traditional Irish cuisine, which includes hearty dishes like Irish stew, fish and chips, and soda bread. And of course, no visit to Ireland would be complete without enjoying a pint of Guinness in a cozy Irish pub.
EXPLORE REMOTE TROPICAL BEACHES
Tulum, St. Lucia, and Riviera Nayarit are the ultimate sun ‘n’ sand destinations among memorable yet less crowded spring break ideas with kids. These tropical paradises offer a perfect blend of natural beauty, family-friendly activities, and stunning beaches that will make your vacation truly unforgettable.
Tulum, Mayan Center on the Atlantic Coast of Mexico
Let’s start with Tulum, now with some direct flights from the US. Crystal-clear turquoise waters and powdery white sand beaches make it one of the best places to go in Mexico with children. This picturesque coastal town on the Yucatan Peninsula, though more popular than the past, offers a more laid-back and eco-friendly experience than neighboring resorts. Having said that, there’s plenty of nightlife so choose your accommodations wisely. One of Tulum’s highlights is the ancient Mayan ruin, a UNESCO World Heritage site, overlooking the Caribbean Sea. Kids will be fascinated by the Mayan history and culture while exploring the ruins.
A Caribbean Secret Awaits in St. Lucia
St. Lucia is known for its lush rainforests, striking volcanic peaks, and luxurious smaller resorts. Families can embark on a thrilling zip line adventure through the rainforest or take a boat tour to see the famous Pitons. The all-inclusive Coconut Bay Beach Resort & Spa is one good bet. Kids love the onsite water park and parents love the CocoLand Kidz Klub that welcomes infants to age 12-years.
Or, plan your visit for the 2025 Saint Lucia Jazz & Arts Festival, April 30- May 11. The lineup includes singer-songwriter John Legend; 70s pop, soul, and funk legends Earth, Wind, and Fire and more. One of the most popular festivals in the Caribbean for 30+ years, the 2025 Jazz & Arts Festival returns to Pigeon Island National Park.
Riviera Nayarit, Hidden Pacific Region North of Puerto Vallarta
Lastly, we have Riviera Nayarit, a hidden gem on Mexico’s Pacific Coast. Lesser-known towns and villages offer a more “real” cultural experience compared to its popular neighbor, Puerto Vallarta. Riviera Nayarit boasts miles of beach and jungle, perfect for building sandcastles, ATV tours, zip lining, surfing and more depending on your family’s interest. Choose between all-inclusive resorts, small, top-value hotels and bungalows that offer a more authentic experience. Enjoy whale watching tours through March, so kids can witness the majestic humpback whales in their natural habitat.
BLACK CULTURE BEYOND BLACK HISTORY MONTH
Recognition of Black history is always a top spring break idea, because families find many special exhibits, performances and talks during February and beyond.
Louisiana
There’s no better way to experience the lives of enslaved people than to walk in their footsteps at some of Louisiana’s most intact plantations. These historic homes, well preserved and documented, commemorate the lives of those who kept them in business, even after the Civil War. Base your family outside of New Orleans for the most affordable hotel rates, and make day trips to some of our top picks. Every day you explore the Great River Road itinerary is another opportunity to share history and lifelong memories with your kids.
Rhode Island:
Visit Providence and walk the Early Black History Tour. It provides an overview of the little-known history of enslaved and freed Black people. Rhode Island was one of the largest producers of Negro cloth, a low-quality clothing made with cotton imported from the South. All faiths and colors worshipped at the Cathedral of St. John & Burial Ground from 1722. Today, it functions as The Center for Reconciliation, an organization dedicated to educating the public about slavery and its aftermath.
Florida
Orlando, Florida offers opportunities to learn about African American culture and local history throughout the year. In Eatonville, visit the Zora Neale Hurston National Museum of Fine Arts for its ongoing exhibits of art by legendary and emerging artists of African descent. Historic Hannibal Square, known as West Winter Park, was home to Black families since 1881. Or stroll through Parramore, Orlando’s oldest Black neighborhood, and drop into the Wells’ Built Museum of African American History and Culture housed in a former hotel.
SPRING FUN IN THE SNOW
There’s nothing like a blue-bird day at a snow-clad mountain resort. And there’s no better idea to enjoy the mountains than spring, when the weather is warmer and the snow is softer. Check out our FUN IN THE SNOW section for ideas on where to go. One of our favorites is the self-styled ‘spring skiing capital’ of Palisades Tahoe in the Lake Tahoe region.
Save with late season lodging and lift ticket deals. Many states including Colorado, Utah, Maine and New York offer kids’ ski free deals and passes for certain grades to promote a lifelong love of the sport. If one of these states is your destination, check in and see if there are any passes available for your brood.
On the East Coast, the Appalachian Mountain Club offers affordable all-inclusive winter stays with guided activities, including for those Wee Wanderers ages 4-6. Spring discounts mean kids stay and eat free during February school vacation weeks at Joe Dodge Lodge and the Highland Center. Guided outdoor adventures come complete with gear you can borrow.
Remember that many ski areas around the country offer special adaptive programs for those with physical and mental challenges. Read more below.
PLAN ACCESSIBLE SPRING TRAVEL FOR THOSE ON THE AUTISM SPECTRUM
It’s not easy to travel with kids and even more difficult when they have special challenges, such as families who have a child on the Autism Spectrum. Fortunately, in some ways, the world is becoming more inclusive.
April is designated World Autism Month, beginning April 2 with World Autism Awareness Day. “Light it Up Blue” is the theme so supporters are asked o wear blue as a symbol of solidarity.
Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication. According to the Centers for Disease Control, autism affects an estimated 1 in 36 children and 1 in 45 adults in the United States today. This disorder is not caused by vaccines, scientists around the world have confirmed.
There are resources available as more businesses, resorts and cruise lines are certified autism friendly. The TSA Cares helpline (call 855/787-2227) provides travelers with disabilities additional assistance when you call 72 hours before your flight. The TSA notification card should help you get whisked through screening without waiting in long lines.
Many museums, theme parks, aquariums, and attractions have special programs to make travel easier. One example is Morgan’s Wonderland in San Antonio, Texas. This is an ultra-accessible park and playground for children and adults with disabilities, including autism. California has worked with destinations such as Visalia to create an autism road trip that includes only places that are Certified Autism Centers, such as The Grammy Museum and Sesame Place in San Diego.
BOOK CRUISES NOW TO RIDE THE WAVE SALES SEASON
A record 19 million Americans are expected to cruise this year, according to AAA. That includes many families who find cruising a great spring break idea. There is no better time to book than the cruise industry’s WAVE season deals period, which typically runs until the end of March and sometimes longer. However, it’s not uncommon for deals to change so if you see one that appeals, book it right away.
This is a good time to work with a travel advisor who is an expert on cruising. Besides finding you the best deal, they can advise you on the best cruise line and ship for your family’s travel style.
Holland America, especially popular with multi-generational groups and for Alaska, is touting its “Start Your Journey Sale”. This means free kids’ cruise fares (those 18 and under traveling as a third and fourth passenger in a cabin), free balcony upgrades, 50% reduced deposits and cruise fares starting at just $129 a day.
Princess Cruises, especially popular with families, has the Come Aboard Sale with up to 40% off, free room upgrade, free third and fourth guests (read that kids!) and a $99 deposit. Cruises to Alaska and the Caribbean can be had right now for less than $500 a person.
Norwegian Cruise Line, with kids’ attractions on the newest ships including a three-level racetrack, virtual gaming and the fastest water slides at sea, is touting 50% discounts plus over $2000 in perks when combined with More At Sea that includes unlimited drinks, more specialty dining, more high-speed WiFi and shore excursion credits.
Abercrombie & Kent, which offers all-inclusive expedition cruises across Europe and to far- flung destinations, including coastal Tanzania and the Arctic, is offering a savings of 40% for the second person in your cabin on select 2025 cruises. We were especially impressed by the extremely knowledgeable Expedition crew on our Arctic trip last summer where we experienced climate change first hand.
If you are thinking about cruising the Greek Islands, consider Greek-owned Celestyal Cruises save up to 50% offer plus an onboard credit.
WHAT’S NEW AT THE THEME PARKS
There are many new theme park attractions and hotel openings this year. In fact, there’s been so much investment at individual theme parks that if you focus on a park’s classic attractions, you can avoid crowds and save time and money.
The most epic story, of course, is the planned May opening of Epic Universe at Universal Orlando. The development includes five themed lands including ones devoted to more Harry Potter, Nintendo and “Dark Universe” featuring horror classics. Expect 50+ rides and attractions, dining, shops and three futuristic resort hotels.
Beyond Orlando, Legoland Florida is adding an aquarium. The interactive touch pool and Florida-specific marine species are sure to lure fans away from the Junior Driving School. Legoland New York, meanwhile, is opening a Lego Duplo Peppa Pig Playground with areas geared to the youngest park goers including Peppa’s treehouse, Daddy Pig’s red car and Grandpa Pig’s boat
Dollywood is celebrating its 40th anniversary with a new show with fan-favorite music. Little ones will appreciate the new Storytime meet and greets and a rotation of favorite live shows from throughout the years.
Silver Dollar City in Branson is celebrating its 65th year with a new Spring Exposition Festival from April 10-May 12. During the festival, showcasing dance-along performances, seasonal foods and rotating bands, Silver Dollar City will reveal the extended Plaza area of the park as an entertainment hub.
Savings Tips for Spring Break Ideas at Theme Parks
No matter how often you visit a theme park or a waterpark, you will always find something new—or something you missed last time. Check fast food restaurants for discount coupons, visit weekdays and save the new rides to try while everyone else is at lunch. Plan ahead for these openings:
- For young park goers, there’s Snoopy’s Soap Box Racer at Kings Island in Mason, Ohio.
- Fly down Catapult Falls at SeaWorld San Antonio, the world’s steepest flume coaster.Busch Gardens Williamsburg debuts The Wolf’s Revenge, a family-friendly coaster that nonetheless will take you down 2,500 feet of track at up to 40 mph. Coaster fans will head to Six Flags Great America for the new Wrath of Rakshasha, the world’s steepest dive coaster.
- Rapterra, the tallest and longest wingcoaster opens at Kings Dominion, celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.
- Look for Iron Menace at Dorney Park in Pennsylvania which suspends riders 160 feet and goes more than 60 mph.

CELEBRATE LOVE AND FAMILY WITHOUT KIDS
Whether it’s a Valentine’s Day (or post Valentine’s Day getaway), let go of the guilt and enjoy a trip without the kids. Experts believe it is healthy for kids to see parents have lives and interests beyond them. The question is not if, but where, to go.
Allianz Partners USA 2025 Valentine’s Day Destinations report revealed increased interest in Valentine’s Day travel (up 42% over 2024) with 77% of the itineraries for domestic travel and 23% for international trips. Warm weather destinations closer to home prevail among the romantics surveyed. Phoenix takes the top spot followed by Orlando and Las Vegas. Miami, New York City, Salt Lake City. Fort Lauderdale, Honolulu and Seattle also ranked high.
The majority of international travelers chose Mexican beach resorts near Cancun, San Jose del Cabo, and Puerto Vallarta, while travelers are also choosing other Caribbean islands and major cities including Paris, London and Mexico City.
“Love is in the air this year, with travel reaching new heights for Valentine’s Day itineraries,” says Daniel Durazo, director of external communications at Allianz Partners USA.
We have a few spring break love tips to ensure a great trip. First, be sure to select a resort where you won’t be surrounded by other people’s children. Keep your cool by purchasing a travel insurance policy to help protect your getaway in case of unexpected travel delays, cancellations, and baggage loss. We know you will want to gift your loved ones an annual travel insurance policy to build anticipation for upcoming vacations, with or without the kids.
In addition to Allianz Travel-branded travel insurance plans, the company offers event ticket protection, registration protection for endurance events and unique travel assistance services such as international medical assistance and concierge services.
