President Biden is traveling to Colorado this week to designate Camp Hale a national monument. The visit is scheduled for Wednesday October 12.

Camp Hale, the legendary home of the 10th Mountain Division, was constructed during World War II, 22 miles west of Vail, between Leadville and Minturn in the Pando Valley, at an elevation of 9,224. The location was ideal for many reasons, one being the surrounding mountains were perfect for training troops in winter warfare.

The 10th Mountain Division fought in the Allies’ Italy campaign during the war. After the war, many of the veterans of the 10th Mountain Division returned to found the modern ski industry in Colorado, other parts of the West and in the Northeast US.
