Take a tour of Jekyll Island’s historic cottages

When you first visit Jekyll Island, you’ll notice a few things right away: the calm, serene beaches, the area’s unique Southern charm that dates back centuries, and of course, the incredible friendliness everywhere you go. From the Jekyll Market to the staff at the Holiday Inn Resort, everyone is willing to say hello or ask you about your day, help you with your bags, or just simply make you feel like you’re at home.

Jekyll Island is located off the coast of the U.S. state of Georgia, in Glynn County and situated right outside of Saint Simons Island and nearby Brunswick. It is one of the Sea Islands and one of the Golden Isles of Georgia barrier islands. And better yet, it’s one of the Georgia coastline’s best-kept secrets and an island that you will instantly fall in love with. The people really do care about you and wanting to make your experience as memorable as possible.

For families, there are so many things to do and see at Jekyll Island. There’s the gorgeous (and Instagram worthy) Driftwood beach, with numerous and fascinating driftwood trees everywhere. If you are looking for a little history tour during your stay, Jekyll Island has so much to offer. You can check out the Brewery Ruins Horton duBignon House, which is a historic site on Riverview Drive. The house was originally constructed in 1743 by Major William Horton, a top military aide to General James Oglethorpe. There’s also the Jekyll Island Museum, and a nearby tour of the cottages owned by the Wall Street rich and famous from over a century ago. Jekyll Island was a private island for the wealthiest and elite families in America to vacation, such as the Rockefellers, Morgans, Vanderbilts, Pulitzers and more.

The Georgia Sea Turtle Center is an animal rescue service and was a true highlight during our stay. The educational center is devoted to the study, care and rehabilitation of sea turtles and their environment.

As far as activities, Jekyll Island does not disappoint, as there is so many different ones to choose from. Biking, boating and fishing are just a few ways that you can bond as a family while together on the island. You can also go on a dolphin tour or participate in a turtle walk on the beach with the Georgia Sea Turtle Center.

If you are planning to visit in the coming months, you are in luck as the Holiday Inn Jekyll Island Resort is offering a great family-friendly package for guests. Their new summer package includes deluxe overnight accommodations at the oceanfront resort, two tickets to the Summer Waves Water Park, bicycle rentals for two and breakfast for two at the hotel’s Beach House restaurant. There are also so many organized activities available for kids under 12 water gun fights, selfie scavenger hunts, and arts and crafts. In the evening, families can relax around the outdoor fire pit and enjoy nightly entertainment, including live music and outdoor movies.

Prices start at $229 per night and the packages may be modified for additional family members. But keep in mind that the offer is only valid until September 9th.
